Engine oil temperature
is always a sensitive issue and everybody appears to have their own views
on the subject.
Oil has an optimum operating
temperature and really needs to have a minimum temperature of 80 degrees C
to stand any chance of doing it's job properly. In the Mini this is even more
critical, due to the unique nature of the engine, gearbox and final drive
all sharing the same oil.
Oil technology has moved
on in leaps and bounds in recent years and the situation is very different
today compared to when the Mini Cooper left the factory with an oil cooler
fitted as standard in the 60's. If you choose to run an oil cooler on
the road, then prepare your self for a surprise when you find out how
long it takes for your oil to reach its operating temperature.
Two adapters have been
developed to screw into the sump plughole of your Mini / Metro gearbox casing.
The first fitting has
a 3/8 BSP male thread that allows Racetech or similar temperature gauges to
be used.
